What Drew Me to Becoming a Therapist

I come from a large family and learned from individuals with different personalities and gifts. I learned how unique everyone was at a young age and it made me curious about what makes people different. I was an observer, often a mediator, and an advocate. Growing up this way set the stage for a career in mental health. It gave me the curiosity to understand others. It gave me the heart to encourage individuals to have compassion for their challenges as well as gifts and the passion to help them become who they authentically are.

What to Expect in a First Session

Client's can expect to be asked questions about what's bringing them into therapy and be heard with curiosity, compassion, and respect. I will ask about what they want out of therapy and what they feel they need. We will address any issues or concerns they have about being in the space. During our first session, I will ask client's to expand on their history and their symptoms at a pace that feels encouraging and comfortable for them.

What Drew Me to Becoming a Therapist

I've always been fascinated by the relationship between the mind, body, and spirit, and by what allows people to heal after difficult experiences. I enjoy helping people move beyond simply understanding their struggles intellectually and toward lasting healing that feels integrated throughout their whole lives.

What Drew Me to Becoming a Therapist

I've always had a deep curiosity about people and the stories, relationships, and experiences that shape who we become. Through my work in healthcare and as a victim advocate, I had the privilege of walking alongside individuals and families during moments of crisis, loss, and change. I witnessed not only pain, but also incredible strength and resilience. Over time, I came to understand how powerful it can be to feel truly heard, understood, and supported—not rushed toward a solution, but met with compassion. I wanted to be able to stay with people beyond those first difficult moments and support their healing, hope, and return to joy. That desire is what led me to this work.

What to Expect in a First Session

Our first session is a gentle starting place where we can get to know each other, talk about what brings you to therapy, and explore what you're hoping for at a pace that feels comfortable. You don't need to have everything figured out or know exactly what to say—we can begin wherever you are. My goal is to create a warm, supportive, and judgment-free space where you feel heard, understood, and not alone as we begin finding a path toward hope, healing, and greater joy.

What Drew Me to Becoming a Therapist

I've always felt born to do this work—I just didn't know the official title until I sat down with my college advisor to pick a major. For as long as I can remember, I've been drawn to people of all ages and walks of life, naturally helping them find their own path. Even during my breaks from practice to raise my kids, this work never truly stopped for me. I deeply love people, and my favorite part of therapy is spotting your strengths before you can see them yourself. From there, we figure out where you want to go and begin untangling the threads to healing. Being part of that journey every day is a true privilege.

In our first session, we take things at your pace. It's a warm, judgment-free time to talk through what's going on, explore what you'd like therapy to look like, and get a feel for how we work together. I'll explain a few housekeeping details, ask what you'd like to know about me, and share what you can expect in the future. From then on, I'll make sure it's a completely collaborative experience—focusing on your strengths, untangling what feels heavy, and ensuring you feel supported every step of the way.

Treatment Modalities

What Drew Me to Becoming a Therapist

Since the time I was very young, I have always been captivated by the challenges and complexities of the human experience. As a fellow human and a therapist, I am always seeking to learn more about how to manage overwhelming emotions, tragic/traumatic events, and the challenges of relationships. I love doing therapeutic work because I am able to bear witness daily to the amazing capacity humans have to heal, grow, and demonstrate courage in even the most challenging circumstances.

What to Expect in a First Session

I know how nerve-wracking it can be to start therapy with someone new. When we first begin, I just want to get to know you better and understand exactly why you are seeking out therapy. I seek to develop a collaborative relationship that is centered on your individual needs for safety, validation, and support. I believe that you are the expert on yourself and what you truly need, and my role is to support you in discovering that innate wisdom. From there, I will explain the outline of some of my therapeutic values and frameworks and we can begin to explore how I can best tailor my approach to you. Together, we will start to explore what indicators we can use to assess whether our time together is effective. We will refer to these touchpoints throughout your counseling to ensure that our time together is meeting your needs.

What Drew Me to Becoming a Therapist

My path to becoming a therapist was born out of my own lived experience. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand how easy it is for people to be hurt, dismissed, or unsupported in their struggles. Having navigated my own journey through anxiety, depression, and life's heavier seasons, I know how heavy those feelings can be when carried alone. I chose this work because I believe everyone deserves to be seen, heard, and met exactly where they are. My approach is rooted in genuine empathy and human connection. I do not sit across from clients as an untouched expert, but as someone who understands the real weight of human pain and is dedicated to helping you move through it toward healing, resilience, and peace.

What Drew Me to Becoming a Therapist

Becoming a therapist was not a sudden decision. It was a calling I ignored for many years. I often told myself I was "too empathetic" for the work, not realizing that empathy, when paired with healthy boundaries and clinical training, is one of a therapist's greatest strengths. Throughout my career in technology, I naturally became the person colleagues sought out when they were navigating stress, conflict, or difficult life circumstances. Long before I became a trained therapist, I found myself drawn to helping people make sense of their experiences and reconnect with their strengths. It was not until I began my own healing journey through trauma therapy, psychodrama, and parts work that I found my voice and reconnected with what had always been there. Those experiences deepened my belief that meaningful change happens when we feel safe enough to be fully seen, not judged, rushed, or expected to have it all figured out. Today, I bring together clinical training, real-world leadership experience, and a deep respect for the courage it takes to ask for help. My goal is to create a space where you can better understand yourself, strengthen your relationships, and move toward a life that feels more authentic and fulfilling.

What to Expect in a First Session

In our first session, there is nothing you need to prepare. We'll spend time getting to know one another, exploring what has brought you to therapy, what you've already tried, and what you hope will be different. I'll ask questions to understand your history, strengths, relationships, and current challenges, and together we'll begin identifying goals that feel meaningful to you. My approach is collaborative, trauma-informed, and tailored to your unique experiences. Whether you're looking for practical strategies, deeper healing, or both, we'll build a plan together at a pace that feels safe and sustainable.

What Drew Me to Becoming a Therapist

I did not come to therapy by a straight line. Before this work, I spent years in the arts, music, education, and community life, and lived and worked across different cultures. I kept seeing how much can change when people have room to be honest, make meaning of what they have lived through, and decide for themselves what comes next. My clinical work in community, mental health, addiction recovery, integrated care, and outpatient therapy made that calling concrete. I became a therapist to offer a grounded, direct relationship where people can hear themselves more clearly and build the life they want to be living.

What to Expect in a First Session

The first session is a chance for us to slow things down and get a clearer picture of what brings you in, what has stopped working, and what you would like to be different. You do not need to tell your whole story at once. I will ask questions, explain how I work, and make room for your questions too. We will begin identifying what matters most and what might be useful right away. My hope is that you leave feeling heard, a little less alone with it, and clearer about what our next step could be.

What Drew Me to Becoming a Therapist

Since childhood, I've found myself drawn to the richness and complexity of people's inner worlds. While this passion eventually became my career, it's also simply part of who I am. As a therapist, I feel deeply honored to walk alongside others who are exploring resilience, relationships, loss, and the many ways that we, as humans, grow through profoundly complex experiences. To me, it is an incredible privilege to witness others rediscover their strengths and move toward the lives that feel uniquely authentic, connected, and fulfilling to them.

What Drew Me to Becoming a Therapist

After a long career in business leadership, I found myself burned out, disillusioned, and unable to ignore my heart's call to make a deeper, more meaningful difference in the lives of others. Becoming a therapist allowed me to pursue my purpose: empowering clients to better understand themselves, recognize their strengths, reduce their suffering, and create lasting change. I believe one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves is the willingness to become curious about our own story. Every client has the capacity to grow beyond the challenges that brought them to therapy. When we replace self-judgment with compassion and curiosity, healing, resilience, and meaningful change become possible, allowing us to build lives that reflect our values and purpose.

What to Expect in a First Session

I understand how important it is to find a therapist who truly "gets" you. The first session is an opportunity for us to begin connecting and creating a space where you feel comfortable, heard, and supported. We'll explore what brings you to therapy, discuss your goals, and answer any questions you have about me and the therapy process. My priority is to create a warm, supportive, and judgment-free environment where you feel safe to explore life's challenges at a pace that feels right for you.
