Therapy Modalities
EMDR Therapy in Boulder, Colorado
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is one of the most well-researched therapies for trauma. It helps the brain reprocess stuck memories so they no longer hijack your nervous system.
What Is EMDR?
EMDR uses bilateral stimulation — typically guided eye movements, taps, or tones — while you briefly hold a difficult memory in mind. This activates the brain's natural processing system, allowing the memory to settle into the past instead of feeling like it is happening now. EMDR is recommended by the World Health Organization, the American Psychological Association, and the Department of Veterans Affairs as a first-line treatment for PTSD.
What EMDR Can Help With
- PTSD and post-traumatic stress
- Complex trauma and C-PTSD
- Single-incident trauma (accidents, assaults, medical events)
- Anxiety, panic, and phobias
- Grief and loss
- Performance anxiety, public speaking, and test anxiety
- Negative core beliefs (“I am not enough,” “I am unsafe”)
The 8 Phases of EMDR
EMDR is a structured, 8-phase protocol: history taking, preparation and resourcing, assessment, desensitization, installation of positive beliefs, body scan, closure, and reevaluation. We never rush into reprocessing. You will have grounding and stabilization tools first.
